Can I eat or drink before an MRI scan?

For most MRI scans, you can eat and drink as normal. Some specialist scans, however, may require fasting or modified preparation.

Follow-up explanation:

MRI scans generally do not require any changes to your diet. In most cases, you can continue eating and drinking right up to your appointment. This makes MRI more convenient compared to some other diagnostic tests.

That said, there are exceptions. Certain abdominal or pelvic scans may require you to avoid food for a few hours beforehand to ensure clearer images. If contrast dye is being used, your clinic may also give specific instructions, such as fasting or limiting fluid intake.

You will always receive guidance from the clinic when you book. Following these instructions closely is important to make sure the images are as accurate as possible and to avoid delays.

GetScanned partners only with CQC-registered clinics in the UK. All preparation guidance is given in advance, and your scan will be overseen by qualified radiographers with results reviewed by specialist radiologists. If you are unsure about eating or drinking before your scan, confirm with the clinic team when booking.
