How long does a private MRI take?
A private MRI scan typically takes 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the body part and whether it’s a full-body scan.
Follow-up explanation
- Scan type & body part – Smaller areas such as the knee, ankle, or wrist usually take around 15–30 minutes. Larger areas like the spine or abdomen may take 45–60 minutes. A full-body MRI can last up to 90 minutes.
- Preparation – Most patients are ready to scan within 10–15 minutes of arrival. You may need to change into a gown and remove any metal objects or jewellery.
- Sequences required – MRIs use different “sequences” (image settings). Complex scans or multiple areas take longer.
- Comfort breaks – If you are claustrophobic or need to move, radiographers can pause between sequences.
- Contrast dye – Some scans require a contrast injection for clearer images. This adds around 10–20 minutes.
Appointment flow
- Arrival & screening (10–15 mins) – Safety checks, changing, completing paperwork.
- Scan time (15–90 mins) – Depends on scan type.
- Post-scan (5–10 mins) – Dressing and leaving; no recovery time needed unless sedatives are given.
Results turnaround: Consultant radiologists review your images and issue a secure report in around 3–5 working days.
CQC-registered providers ensure appointments run smoothly, and many private clinics offer evening or weekend slots for flexibility.
