How should I prepare for a mammogram?
Wear a two-piece outfit and avoid deodorants, lotions, or powders on your chest or underarms before a mammogram, as these can interfere with the images.
Preparation for a mammogram is straightforward, but a few small steps can improve image clarity and comfort.
- Clothing
Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top. Avoid metal fasteners or underwires if possible.
- Skincare Products
Do not apply deodorant, talc, perfume, or body lotion on your chest or underarms. These can appear as white spots on the X-ray and mimic micro-calcifications, potentially affecting accuracy.
- Timing
If you’re pre-menopausal, try to book your scan for the week after your period, when breasts are least tender.
- Medication and medical history
Tell the clinic if you have breast implants, previous surgery, or any family history of breast cancer. You can continue regular medicines as usual.
During the scan, each breast is briefly compressed between two plates to obtain clear images from different angles. The compression may feel uncomfortable for a few seconds but is not harmful.
After your mammogram appointment, you can resume normal activities immediately. Your report will be available within 24–48 hours through your GetScanned account.
