What happens during an MRI scan?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a widely used diagnostic tool that provides clear, detailed pictures of organs, tissues, and joints. Understanding what happens can help reduce anxiety and prepare you for the experience.

Step 1: Arrival & preparation

• On arrival, you’ll be asked to complete a safety questionnaire.
  
  
• You’ll need to remove all metal objects, including jewellery, belts, or hearing aids.
  
  
• Depending on the clinic, you may change into a gown.
  
  
• If your scan requires contrast dye, this will be explained, and you may have a small cannula inserted into your arm.
  
  

Step 2: Positioning & start of the scan

• A radiographer will help you lie on a motorised table, which slides into the MRI scanner.
  
  
• Cushions or supports may be provided to keep you comfortable and still.
  
  
• You’ll be given earplugs or headphones, as the machine makes loud tapping or thumping sounds.
  
  

Step 3: During the scan

• The radiographer operates the machine from a separate room but maintains two-way communication with you.
  
  
• It’s important to stay as still as possible, as movement blurs images.
  
  
• The scan is completely painless. Some sequences take just a few minutes, while others last longer.
  
  
• If you feel uncomfortable, you can use a call button to alert the radiographer.
  
  

Step 4: After the scan

• The table slides back out, and you can get dressed immediately.
  
  
• If contrast dye was used, you may be asked to stay briefly for observation.
  
  
• There are no after-effects for most patients, and you can usually return to normal activities right away.
  
  

Results: Consultant radiologists review the images and send a detailed report within 3–5 working days.
