How much does a private MRI cost in the UK?

A private MRI scan in the UK with GetScanned starts from £340, including the scan, radiologist report, and results. In most urban hubs, a single-body-part MRI is more likely to cost around £400.

Follow-up explanation:

Private MRI scan prices in the UK vary depending on the body part being scanned, the location of the clinic, and whether contrast dye is required. With GetScanned, prices start at £340 for a standard single-area MRI. In most major cities, it is more realistic to expect a single body part to cost around £400. More complex scans, multiple areas, or full-body MRIs cost more, but all prices are clear and shown upfront before you book.

Estimated Starting Pricing:

Body Parts Starting Price
1 Body Part £340
2 Body Parts £470
3 Body Parts £590
4 Body Parts £709

Unlike the NHS, private MRI services offer faster access - often within a few days - and flexible appointment times. You do not need a GP referral; GetScanned’s process allows for self-referral, meaning you can book online, choose your preferred location, and receive your results promptly.

All scans are performed in CQC-registered clinics across the UK, using advanced MRI machines operated by trained radiographers. Every scan is reviewed by a GMC-registered consultant radiologist, and a detailed written report is provided, usually within 3-5 working days.

Your results can be shared with your GP or specialist for continuity of care.

MRI scans are non-invasive and do not use radiation. For some scans, a contrast agent may be required to provide more detailed images. This will be discussed with you beforehand and normally costs an additional £100. Preparation instructions vary by body part, and you will receive these when booking.

If you have private medical insurance, check whether MRI scans are covered under your policy - some insurers reimburse private imaging, while others require pre-authorisation.

“While NHS MRI scans are free, private scans come with a cost. With GetScanned, you gain much faster access to diagnostic imaging, helping to ease concerns and reduce the anxiety that often comes with waiting for important health decisions.”
