Is a private full-body MRI worth it?
A private full-body MRI can be worth it if you value proactive health, private service, and peace of mind
A private full-body MRI scan provides a broad overview of your internal organs, muscles, tissues, and joints in a single session. Unlike targeted MRIs, which focus on one specific area (such as the brain, spine, or knee), a full-body scan screens multiple regions for early detection of issues such as tumours, inflammation, or musculoskeletal problems.
The main advantage of going private is speed and access. NHS MRI scans often involve long waiting times, and the NHS does not offer full-body MRI as a screening service. NHS scans are reserved for acute medical needs - and even then, waiting lists can be lengthy.
With GetScanned, private full-body MRI appointments are usually available within days. All partner clinics are CQC-registered (Care Quality Commission), ensuring quality and safety. Every scan is reported by a consultant radiologist, and results are typically returned securely within 3–5 working days.
Another key benefit is self-referral. You don’t need a GP referral to book. GetScanned connects you with a GP who will review your medical history and confirm suitability before your scan, and you’ll also receive a post-scan consultation to discuss your results.
Private full-body MRIs are especially valuable for those seeking reassurance, individuals with family health concerns, or professionals who need fast, uninterrupted access to care.
Important considerations:
- Depth of scan: A full-body MRI is designed for broad screening, so it doesn’t go as deep into any one area as a targeted MRI. That’s why we recommend it as a proactive screening tool, but suggest targeted scans if you have symptoms or need a detailed view of a specific organ or joint.
- Coverage: Despite the name, full-body MRIs do not include the arms and legs. The scan covers your torso and organs from head to the end of the pelvis.
- Cost: In the UK, private full-body MRIs usually range from £999 to £3,500+, depending on the clinic, region, and what’s included. The GetScanned full-body MRI is £1,500 (and includes lungs and spine).
For many people, the combination of comprehensive imaging, fast turnaround, and clinical reassurance makes the cost worthwhile. However, for symptom-driven cases, a targeted MRI may be a more cost-effective choice.
Insurance note: Most UK private health insurance does not cover full-body MRI scans unless they are medically indicated. Always check your policy.
