Abdominal/pelvic MRI – what conditions can it detect?

An abdominal or pelvic MRI can detect problems affecting the liver, kidneys, bowel, reproductive organs, blood vessels, and surrounding tissues, offering detailed images without radiation.

Follow-up explanation

Abdominal and pelvic MRI scans use powerful magnets and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of organs and soft tissues in the lower body. Unlike CT scans, they do not involve ionising radiation, making them particularly useful for patients who may need repeat imaging.

Doctors may recommend an abdominal or pelvic MRI to investigate symptoms such as unexplained pain, bloating, blood in the stool or urine, or abnormal test results.

Typical conditions an abdominal MRI can detect include:

  • Liver disease: such as cirrhosis, fatty liver, or tumours.
  • Kidney and urinary tract problems: including cysts, stones, or masses.
  • Pancreatic conditions: such as pancreatitis or tumours.
  • Bowel and gastrointestinal issues: including inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s, or suspected cancers.

A pelvic MRI is often used to examine:

  • Reproductive organs: such as the uterus, ovaries, prostate, and bladder.
  • Pelvic pain causes: endometriosis, fibroids, or chronic pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Cancer staging: to help determine the extent of pelvic cancers before treatment.
  • Vascular disease: blood flow problems or aneurysms affecting pelvic blood vessels.

Because of their clarity, these scans help clinicians plan surgery, monitor treatment, or confirm diagnoses when ultrasound or CT results are inconclusive.

Why does it matter?

An abdominal or pelvic MRI provides unmatched soft-tissue detail. It is often the scan of choice when ultrasound or CT cannot provide enough information, particularly in complex cases involving organs, reproductive health, or cancer.
