Does health insurance cover a private MRI or a full-body MRI?

Most private health insurance policies cover MRI scans when they’re medically necessary, but full-body MRI scans are rarely included unless specifically justified by a doctor.

Follow-up explanation

In the UK, private health insurance usually covers MRI scans if there is a clear medical reason. For example, if your GP or consultant recommends an MRI to investigate symptoms such as persistent back pain, headaches, or joint problems, most insurers will approve and fund the scan at a recognised private hospital or imaging centre.

Policies vary - some require a consultant referral, while others may reimburse you if you book directly or use your GP. Always check your policy documents and speak to your insurer before booking.

Full-body MRI scans are generally excluded because insurers classify them as screening rather than treatment-related. Unless your plan specifically covers screening benefits, you’ll typically need to self-fund.

Insurers usually apply these criteria before approving a scan:

  • Referral required – typically from a consultant
  • Medical necessity – symptoms must justify the scan
  • Recognised clinic – the scan must be done at an insurance-approved, CQC-registered partner hospital or centre

Some premium or corporate policies may include screening benefits, but this is uncommon.

Typical costs

  • Standard MRI (per body part): £299 – £700+
  • Full-body MRI: £1,000 – £3,500+ depending on scope and provider
  • GetScanned full-body MRI: £1,500 (includes spine and lung scans)

Tip: If you’re seeking a full-body MRI for reassurance rather than symptoms, you’ll almost always need to self-pay. With self-referral, you can book online and receive results quickly without waiting for insurance approval.

Results turnaround: 3–5 working days, reviewed by consultant radiologists.

Insurance usually funds MRI scans where there’s a clear clinical need, but screening-style full-body scans are almost always self-pay.
