MRI for knee pain – what does it show?
An MRI scan of the knee shows bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues in high detail, helping to diagnose injuries, arthritis, or unexplained pain.
Follow-up explanation
Knee pain is one of the most common joint problems, caused by injuries, arthritis, or other conditions affecting the joint. An MRI scan of the knee provides detailed images of both bone and soft tissue, making it a powerful tool for identifying the underlying cause.
Unlike X-rays, which only show bones, or ultrasounds, which capture movement in soft tissues, an MRI can visualise all structures inside the knee, including:
- Bones – to detect subtle fractures.
- Cartilage – to assess wear, tears, or early arthritis.
- Ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) – commonly injured in sports.
- Menisci (shock absorbers) – for tears or degeneration.
- Tendons & muscles – for strains or partial tears.
- Joint lining & fluid – to detect inflammation, swelling, or infection.
This makes a knee MRI particularly useful if you have:
- Ongoing pain after an injury.
- Swelling, locking, or instability.
- Suspected ligament or meniscus tear.
- Unexplained pain not resolving with rest or physiotherapy.
- Concerns about arthritis progression.
You can self-refer without needing a GP referral. At GetScanned, all scans are carried out in CQC-registered clinics using modern MRI machines, with results reviewed by consultant radiologists.
Preparation
No special preparation is usually needed for a knee MRI. You will be asked to remove jewellery and metal items, and the scan typically takes 20-30 minutes while you remain still.
Results & continuity of care
Your scan will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who will provide a structured report. If follow-up is needed, we will guide you on the next steps, and you can easily share your results with your GP or specialist. You will also have secure access to your images and reports through our report viewer technology.
Insurance & payment
Payment is taken at online checkout, and you will receive booking confirmation and instructions by email straight away. This is a self-pay service, but if your MRI is medically required, you can check with your insurer and our support team to confirm coverage.
