What is a bone density DEXA scan and what does it show?
A DEXA scan measures bone density to assess your risk of osteoporosis or fractures. It shows how strong your bones are and helps diagnose conditions like low bone mass.
A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a quick, low-radiation imaging test that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It’s the most accurate way to assess bone health and is commonly used to diagnose osteopenia or osteoporosis, conditions that cause bones to become fragile and more likely to break.
During a DEXA scan, two X-ray beams at different energy levels pass through your bones — usually the spine, hip, or forearm. The amount of X-rays absorbed by the bone indicates its density. The results are displayed as T-scores and Z-scores:
- T-score: Compare your bone density to a healthy young adult.
- Z-score: Compare your bone density to people of your age, sex, and size.
A T-score above –1 is normal, –1 to –2.5 suggests osteopenia (mild bone loss), and below –2.5 indicates osteoporosis.
DEXA scans are especially recommended for:
- Women over 50 or post-menopause
- Men over 65
- Anyone with a history of fractures, long-term steroid use, or certain medical conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
Booking a private DEXA scan through GetScanned offers fast access, clear results, and referral to a clinician for advice if bone loss is detected. Results are interpreted by a consultant radiologist and uploaded securely to your patient portal, typically within 1–2 working days.
