I’m claustrophobic. What are my options for an MRI?

If you’re claustrophobic, you still have safe options for an MRI. These include open MRI machines, sedation, or comfort aids to make the scan more manageable.

Follow-up explanation

MRI scans require lying still inside a scanner, which for some people can trigger claustrophobia. The good news is that clinics offer different approaches to help patients complete their scans comfortably and safely.

Your main options if you are claustrophobic:

  • Open MRI scanners: Some clinics have “open” or wide-bore MRI machines, which have a larger opening or are partially open at the sides. These are less enclosed and often easier for people with claustrophobia.

  • Sedation or mild medication : Your doctor may prescribe a mild sedative (such as diazepam) to help you relax before the scan. Clinics can arrange this if appropriate, though you’ll need someone to accompany you home afterwards.

  • Comfort measures:  Earplugs, headphones with music, eye masks, or mirrors that let you see out of the scanner are available in most centres. Radiographers stay in constant contact via a microphone.

  • Bring a companion:  In many clinics, a friend or family member can stay in the room during the scan for reassurance (they must be screened for metal safety).

  • Shorter scan sessions:  Targeted MRIs (brain, knee, spine) take less time than a full-body scan. Clinics can schedule breaks between sequences if needed.

Safety note: The scan itself is painless and uses no radiation. UK providers are regulated by the CQC (Care Quality Commission), so safety and patient comfort are prioritised.

Turnaround: Reports are usually available within 3–5 working days, reviewed by consultant radiologists.
