Can I have an MRI with a pacemaker or defibrillator?
Some pacemakers and defibrillators are MRI-safe, but others are not. Always check with your cardiologist and the radiology team before booking.
Follow-up explanation
MRI scans use strong magnetic fields, which can interfere with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). In the past, most devices were considered unsafe for MRI. However, many modern pacemakers and defibrillators are now MRI-conditional, meaning they can be scanned under strict conditions.
Before your scan, you will need to provide details of your device, such as the make, model, and implantation date. The radiology team may contact your cardiologist to confirm whether it is MRI-compatible. Scans with MRI-conditional devices are usually carried out in specialist hospital settings where cardiology support is available.
If your device is not MRI-safe, alternative imaging such as CT or ultrasound may be recommended. All MRI referrals through GetScanned are performed in CQC-registered clinics across the UK, with results reviewed by GMC-registered radiologists.

Having a pacemaker or defibrillator doesn’t always rule out an MRI, but safety checks with your cardiology team are vital before proceeding.
